DTAC BESPOKE: INTUITIVE DESIGN, GLOWING REPORTS
26.10.10
When DTAC became a sponsor of the Australian Institute of Architects 'Now and When Australian Urbanism' exhibition at this years Venice Architecture Biennale, they were enthusiastic not only about providing bespoke stair edging for the event, but also about the potential of pushing boundaries and offering design and manufacture expertise which would become an integral part of the exhibition design and visitor experience.
Approached by Design By Pidgeon, exhibition and graphic designers for the event, DTAC were asked to assist in the design and construction of typographic 3-dimensional cubes that would spell the word 'Now and When'. A major part of the brief was that all signage had to be flat packed in order to be able to be cost effectively shipped to Venice and easily assembled on site.
Dean Homicki, CEO and head designer for DTAC, came up with an intuitive design system whereby only two parts – a male and female rod – were used to construct the overall cube. This meant that flat packing could be easily achieved, plus installers only needed screws and an allen key to construct the signage on site.
DTAC's intelligent approach was then extended into designing tree cube sculptures that formed an entry to the pavilion along with furniture for the reception area of the pavilion. In conjunction with Dulux, a custom made fluorescent orange powder coat was created and applied to these bespoke elements enabling the items to glow throughout the exhibition space which was lit by UV light.
DTAC bespoke: intuitive design with extraordinary results.
